Hiding behind these dark colours
Sending negative notes of trust
Hoping no one will approach.
No reciprocating of lust.

Peeking behind these dark wings
Watching the sunlight dance in glee
Afraid that if I peeked too much
I'll fall down to my knees

Broken wings and tattered heart
Bloodied hands and blistered feet
Though my pride has been tainted
Head held high, I admit defeat

Patiently waiting for the wounds to heal
So deeply engraved into my skin
Holding faithfully to a promise
Of a better life unseen

Finally bravery has settled in
Before courage past me by
Slowly.
Very slowly, I open up my wings
To begin the flight of the butterfly
